Cuyahoga Community College STEM Building Addition and Renovations

Parma, Ohio | 64,000 gsf new/23,500 gsf renovation | $28 million | 2019 | LEED Gold

Designed to provide the College with contemporary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics program space, the Addition is designed to be holistically sustainable, and creates a major new hub, entered at the northeast of campus.

A high-performance building with a projected energy use intensity (pEUI) of 73kBtu/sf/yr, the exterior design comprises a terracotta rainscreen, metal panels and glass, and effectively integrates solar shading at all exposed sides of the building.  The building achieved LEED Gold certification.

The central social space displays building-integrated photovoltaics in the 100 foot-long skylight, offsetting some of the building’s energy-use, and includes three biophylic walls, connecting its occupants to nature.  A constructed wetland east of the building, designed as an outdoor classroom and social space, transforms into a reflective pool following heavy rains.

Program components of the STEM Addition include technology-rich teaching labs for biology, chemistry, physics, and information/technology, a variety of student study spaces, and modern and secure locker room facilities for the adjacent physical education spaces.

In support of evolving educational paradigms such as cross-disciplinary problem-based learning, the Addition showcases spaces that foster interdisciplinary collaborative investigation, including an interdisciplinary lab designed to be used as a research space but that allows students to congregate for “chalk talks,”surrounded by a tissue culture room, laser lab, equipment room, and student write-up space, as well as an Innovation Center intended as a “sandbox” for electronic interactive collaborations among students, students and faculty, or faculty from different disciplines.

The project received two Awards of Excellence from the Northern Ohio Chapter of the commercial real estate development association NAIOP:  Education Architecture Project of the Year and Education Interior Design of the Year.

Ellenzweig served as Design Architect and Lab Planner, working in a collaboration with Weber Murphy Fox, Architect of Record.
