Stony Brook, New York | 60,000 gsf | $50 million | 2021

The new building serving as home to the Institute for Discovery and Innovation in Medicine and Engineering will link Stony Brook University’s strength in advance data analytics with pioneering medical engineering to solve several strategically-targeted problems in medicine via interdisciplinary approaches.

Located within the University’s Research and Development Park, the building will provide research and development labs and advanced data analytic facilities to support a changing set of needs in areas of disease research leading to the development of new products, devices, and markets in science and technology.

More than 100 researchers comprising 12 research groups will be housed in the new building, which will support their work with contemporary, flexible laboratories; write-up areas; conference and meeting rooms; collaboration and meeting spaces; a vivarium; offices; and a kitchenette. Much of the laboratory space will be devoted to highly specialized equipment, including a high-performance computer cluster, multi-modal advanced imaging facility; 3-D bio printing lab; and neuro-engineering lab.

The building will be self-supporting with its own chiller, boiler, and cooling tower. It is designed to achieve a minimum of LEED silver certification in accordance with New York State requirements for new building construction.
