Transforming Rainwater to Advantage

Cuyahoga Community College
STEM Addition and Renovations
Parma, Ohio

The 64,000-square-foot addition to the College adopts a sustainable site design approach to rainwater management, retaining 11,000 cubic feet of rainwater run-off on site, in the event of a once in a 100-year storm.  Adjacent to an outdoor plaza east of the building, a constructed wetland designed as an outdoor classroom and social space, transforms into a reflective pool following heavy rains.

Landscaping materials include haydite gravel, flood-tolerant ornamental grasses, multi-stem native trees, and  flowering perennials, vividly contributing  to the campus’ ecosystem and biodiversity.
