The Jim and Thomas Duff Center for Science and Technology Innovation, expected to open in a few months, is the largest academic building in the history of the University of Mississippi’s main campus and its most environmentally friendly—it is projected to be 70% carbon neutral relative to similar buildings nationally. This high performance building integrates such features as terracotta window-shading louvers at the south façade, sensor technology that monitors laboratory air quality, 36 filtering fume hoods, and energy recovery in both the heating and cooling systems, all contributing to this lab building’s significant energy use reduction.

With the completion of the Central Utility Plant Upgrade Project this year, MIT has improved its district energy system with the most advanced cogeneration technology for combined heating, cooling, and power delivery. Dual 20 megawatt combustion turbine generators produce electrical power that contributes 15 to 25% less carbon than the current New England grid and increases the resiliency of local energy systems.

New England’s autumn light makes a wonderful backdrop for this in-the-field photo of Ellenzweig’s newly completed addition to Spaulding Hall, a biological sciences research and teaching building at the University of New Hampshire. The 47,000-square-foot addition is designed to fit well within the context of the varying architecture and environments surrounding it, bridging both traditional and newer, more contemporary aesthetics. A second phase of the project, now under construction, will renovate the existing 1958 building.

The University of Maine celebrated the opening of the Ferland Engineering Education and Design Center with a dedication and ribbon cutting on August 24, 2022. The 110,000 gsf research and teaching building was designed by Ellenzweig in collaboration with WBRC of Bangor, Maine, and constructed by Consigli.

The ceremony drew more than 500 attendees representing the Ferland family, alumni, students, faculty, members of the administration and the University system, and the design and construction team, the latter of which included many University of Maine graduates.

Our most recent design commissions include the new 100,000 gsf Multidisciplinary Engineering Building for Stony Brook University (our current project with Stony Brook is the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine building, in construction); laboratory renovations for Boston College; a new laboratory building and renovations to existing facilities for Massachusetts Maritime Academy; and modernization of laboratories in the Math and Science Building for North Shore Community College.

Ellenzweig is proud to announce the promotion of three team members to Principal and six to Associate. These promotions recognize the exceptional ongoing contributions of these individuals to advancing the firm’s practice through leadership, design excellence and innovation, project management, and client service.

In an expansion of the firm’s top leadership, Associate Principals Peter Herman, AIA; Michael Nipoti, RA; and Jeanne Kuespert Roberts, AIA, have been elevated to Principal. The newly appointed Associates include: Michael Bushert, RA, LEED AP BD+C; Jillian Cornelius, Associate AIA, WELL AP; Melissa Kuronen, Marketing Manager; Jessie Lin, AIA, LEED AP BD+C; Scott Mercier; and Amelia Thrall, AIA, LEED AP BD+C.

Ellenzweig recently completed the Flowing Seawater Laboratory Renovation and Infrastructure Upgrades Project for the Darling Marine Center—a University of Maine research and education facility located in Walpole, Maine, on the Damariscotta River. The renovations to the 3,000-square-foot building provide flexible marine research labs and support facilities; the project included upgrades to the flowing seawater infrastructure and pump system that provides seawater to the research labs.

Ellenzweig served as Architect and Lab Planner. Key team members included TAG Engineering, LLC, of Woods Hole, Massachusetts; BR+A Consulting Engineers of Boston; and Becker Structural Engineers (now Thornton Tomasetti) of Portland, Maine.

The Massachusetts state government passed historic legislation in March that introduces a master plan for reducing greenhouse gas (carbon) emissions and combating climate change.  “An Act Creating a Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy” sets long-term and intermediate goals while establishing wide-ranging initial steps that will promote rapid, positive change.  Read more.

Construction of the 200,000 gsf STEM building is now underway, and is scheduled for completion in 2023. The new facility will provide contemporary teaching facilities for Engineering, Science, Technology, and Mathematics/Computer Science.

Ellenzweig is excited to announce that our STEM Center at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio, has won two Awards of Excellence from the Northern Ohio Chapter of the commercial real estate development association NAIOP.  The project was honored with both the Education Interior Design of the Year and Education Architecture Project of the Year.  We are proud to have received these two awards for this highly sustainable building that provides contemporary learning spaces and labs for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Information Technology.

Ellenzweig served as Design Architect and Lab Planner, working in a collaboration with Weber Murphy Fox, Architect of Record.

At the recent Green Build Showcase event, Project Sagamore received two of the major awards presented by the USGBC MA Chapter: Green Building of the Year and Market Leader in Health and Wellness.

Completed for EMD Serono in Billerica, MA, the Sagamore research and office complex was designed to enhance the company’s progressive work culture through employee engagement, well-being, technology, and biophilic design.

Ellenzweig hosted a job shadow day for a group of high school students interested in careers in the design and construction fields. By attending various presentations by the Ellenzweig staff, touring the office to learn about different career paths, and participating in a creative design charrette, the students experienced what it is like to work at an architecture firm.

Ellenzweig held a similar event for students from the Margarita Muñiz Academy and English High School.
