Biology Teaching Labs

Ellenzweig compiles benchmarking information for a wide variety of lab types and functions. One example is the chart illustrated here, which documents net square feet per student for an Intro Biology lab. The chart shows a range of space per student across a number of Ellenzweig-designed science building projects (institutions where the projects are located are indicated by numbers).

These data are utilized in new projects to provide a context for evaluating an evolving space program. The benchmarks are not intended to be prescriptive, but are meant to show the range of values across various projects. If a certain design for a new project were pushing the boundaries at either end of the benchmark spectrum, it would prompt a further assessment of the approach that led to that design and area allocation.
