University of Vermont Votey Hall of Engineering

Burlington, Vermont | 194,000 gsf new; 24,000 gsf renovations | $85 million | 2019

The STEM complex is comprised of a new building and a partially renovated Votey Hall. The new building is sited to the immediate east of Williams Hall and Old Mill/Lafayette Hall. The Cook Physical Sciences Building and Angell Lecture Center – both unable to accommodate contemporary teaching and research requirements – were demolished sequentially to make way for the new buildings.

Comprised of two parallel and connected wings, the new STEM building provides research and teaching laboratories in the west-facing wing, and classrooms, lecture halls, offices, and administrative spaces in the east-facing wing. A glass link connects the two wings, and provides space for a student commons and shared workshop spaces.

Physically and programmatically integrated with the new building, Votey Hall was selectively renovated to upgrade engineering teaching labs, research labs, and classrooms, and the existing south façade egress stairway was replaced with a new code compliant stairway and entry vestibule. A new bridge connects Votey’s third floor with the second floor of the new science building, creating a new STEM complex that integrates science and engineering disciplines in one central campus location.
