EMD Serono Sagamore North Building

Billerica, Massachusetts | 25,000 gsf (renovation) | $5 million | 2014 | LEED Platinum CI

The project transformed the interior of the former Protein Production Laboratory, designed by Ellenzweig and constructed in 2003, from small-scale production clean rooms and research laboratories to high-performance office space—an environment designed to foster collaboration, teamwork, and creativity. Ellenzweig provided programming, architectural design, and construction administration services for the complete repositioning and interior renovation of EMD’s Sagamore Building. The existing building form and floor-to-floor height were preserved and utilized to transform the floor area.  The new design promotes a non-hierarchical office space with its open-concept design, affording users flexible-use desk space for individual and group work and the opportunity to share ideas as well as office amenities.

Program spaces include offices, lunch and break rooms, an interactive café, outdoor patio, fitness and locker/shower rooms, conference rooms, a variety of large, open work spaces and small, more intimate work spaces, quiet “huddle” rooms, and single-person telephone rooms.

The project included a connector bridge to EMD’s R & D Building, also designed by Ellenzweig.
