University of Rhode Island Narragansett Bay Campus Master Plan

Narragansett, Rhode Island | 300,000 gsf / 20 buildings | 2016

The Narragansett Bay Campus Master Plan was commissioned by the University of Rhode Island to assess the current condition of the entire Bay Campus and to provide a strategic plan for campus renewal that will serve the University for many years into the future.

The Narragansett Bay Campus serves the Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) and Ocean Engineering (OE) faculty, staff, and students. The Master Plan developed by Ellenzweig incorporates new and renovated buildings, enhanced resiliency and ecological function, landscape improvements, and sustainable energy-saving operations systems. A focal point of the plan is to improve the campus’s coastal resiliency; recommendations including improving existing infrastructure, drainage, and other utilities, and strategically placing vegetation to prevent erosion.

The scope of the planning effort included utilization studies to leverage space, time, and related initiatives to facilitate new learning pedagogies; analysis of improvements to the Campus for the next growth cycle; planning for physical technological change to create greater interconnectivity among URI campuses, remote field operations, students, faculty, and partners worldwide; design alternatives to improve site circulation and transportation; and study of the Horn Laboratory Building. The Master Plan charts the course for development of a highly energy efficient and environmentally responsible design for the Campus.
